Karl's fourth album of original bass-led material, 'And/Or', is a unique glimpse into the creative process. He explains: "When I compose, I usually start with a very simple set of chords that suggest a melody. When I'm happy with that melody, often I will then strip the original chords out and substitute a completely different sequence, creating a kind of eerie disjointedness between the melody and the chords which I find very appealing. In the process of doing this, I will often try out four or five different chord sequences or arrangements until I arrive at the one that best fits the mood I'm trying to create. Those other versions are no less 'valid' or interesting as pieces of music - they just weren't quite what I was looking for at that moment. On this album, I thought I would let the listener in on this process and offer an alternative version of each track and let them decide which they prefer".

My immediate response, when listening to this record for the first time, was “oh, this is fun stuff!”. There are many tributaries in confluence here, with influences as varied as Rhumba, various forms of Classical music, Jazz, a certain ECM Records/Third Stream aesthetic, and of course Congolese music combining into an organic and many-sided whole. While Niwel Tsumbu’s music can sparkle with impressive intellectual and technical prowess, it is at once music with much honestly and at times raw emotional content, moving seamlessly though moments of joy and introspection.

Bassist Sean Maynard-Smith is following up the 2021 recording Eh, No and his more confidence-inducing title Actually, Yeah in 2023, with a release by the Pizza Jazz group aptly named Home Delivery. Born by way of the lactic workshopping of Luckys’ Pizza Jazz evenings at their regular residency in Dublin, Maynard-Smith and his fellows Darragh O’Kelly on keyboards and drummer Brendan Doherty are joined on Home Delivery by American saxophone expat Steve Welsh. What follows is a record that is eccentric in all the right ways.

The 5-track EP is a rich tapestry of sound and emotion, recorded across two iconic locations: Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville and The Barn of Music in Dublin. This sophomore album leans heavily into McMahon's love for old-school soul, with lush, warm keys and organs played by Boston-native Clifford Bond and a crisp drum backdrop provided by Colorado’s Dev Malloy. The basslines, both electric and upright, come alive under the fingers of Nashville session player Zachariah Witcher, while Dubliner Darren Giles adds a tasteful touch of electric guitar.

Charlie’s journey into the world of singing unfolds against the backdrop of his early 20s while immersed in jazz guitar studies at Newpark in Dublin. Often compared to the iconic Chet Baker, Charlie's venture into vocals emerged from the necessity of funding his music education. The dilemma was clear—venues craved singers, not student jazz guitarists.
