In January 2019, I called Kevin Brady and Dave Redmond for a gig that fell into my lap through IMC at the Wild Duck in Dublin. I had been wanting to play with them for some time and to my delight, they were free and down to play. The gig was instant fun with zero rehearsing and I knew I wanted to play more with them. They called me a couple months later to head to Mexico City to perform at the EuroJazz Festival and do some masterclasses. We had an absolute blast and have continued to play since.

Vol. 1, released on May 2, 2023, is the debut recording by The Workshop, a collaborative five-piece jazz ensemble featuring Chris Engel (soprano and alto saxophone), Bill Blackmore (trumpet), Darragh O’Kelly (piano), Cormac O’Brien (double bass), and Matthew Jacobson (drums). The album presents nine original compositions by members of the group and balances stylistic diversity with a strong sense of ensemble cohesion, reflecting the musicians’ long-standing professional relationships. While the material ranges from introspective and lyrical to rhythmically driven and energetic, the recording maintains a consistent aesthetic grounded in contemporary jazz practice, with occasional subtle references to other musical traditions. Throughout, the interplay between the musicians, supported by a flexible and responsive rhythm section, allows for both structural clarity and open improvisation, resulting in a debut that is adventurous yet accessible in its approach.

3 fearless Irish Improvisers who are creating their own definition of contemporary jazz through a multi-dimensional sound that is at home with swing, Bop and free Jazz as it is with experimental Electronic Space-funk
RBG Trio is a collective of 3 of Ireland’s top improvising musicians, Meilana Gillard - Tenor Saxophone, Dave Redmond - Double Bass, and Kevin Brady - Drums. Together they have been lauded for their exciting live performances and recordings, which feature deep ensemble interplay as well as lyrical and expansive compositions. They continue to express themselves over various styles of improvisation, groove and textures ranging from swing through free jazz and grunge - more recently adopting an electric treatment featuring effects and electric bass creating their own brand of experimental space funk.
“Rhythmically grooving and tightly tethered one moment, loose and exploratory the next, RBG Trio’s aesthetic was both familiar in a rootsy way and thrillingly free-spirited.” All About Jazz

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Infinitely Clear gets a 5 STARS from The Irish Times
‘Infinitely Clear, however, is on a whole other level, a gorgeous confection of jazz, folk, soul and country that will surely bring her the attention she deserves and bears comparison – in sound, in finesse, and in its potential to make a star of its creator – with Norah Jones’s debut album.....Infinitely Clear is a heart-warming gem, a classic in the making from an artist who has found her groove and, one senses, is about to be huge.’
