The dilemma was clear—venues craved singers, not student jazz guitarists.

In a twist of fate, Charlie secured a gig on the condition that he sang while accompanying himself on the guitar. Despite never having sung a note before, he embraced the challenge, drawing inspiration from the timeless 'Chet Baker Sings' catalogue. This marked the inception of Charlie's vocal career—a journey that began with self-accompanied solo performances and a deep dive into the vocal repertoire of jazz standards.

Adding layers to the album's inspiration, Charlie finds influence in records resonating from his childhood home. Notably, Julie London's 'Julie Is Her Name' highlights the delicate interplay of guitar and voice, featuring the masterful guitar playing of Barney Kessel.
