Willow is the sophomore album from Jennifer. The 5-track EP is a rich tapestry of sound and emotion, recorded across two iconic locations: Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville and The Barn of Music in Dublin. This sophomore album leans heavily into McMahon's love for old-school soul, with lush, warm keys and organs played by Boston-native Clifford Bond and a crisp drum backdrop provided by Colorado’s Dev Malloy. The basslines, both electric and upright, come alive under the fingers of Nashville session player Zachariah Witcher, while Dubliner Darren Giles adds a tasteful touch of electric guitar.
McMahon's vocals are the heart of this EP. Whether tender or soaring, her voice channels the spirit of a true storyteller, reminiscent of the greats like Aretha Franklin and Jeff Buckley. Each track on Willow is meticulously crafted, showcasing her ability to blend soulful melodies with deeply emotive lyrics.
The Making of Willow
The journey to Willow began in November 2021 at Sound Emporium Studios, where McMahon started laying down the foundations of the album. The recording process continued in Dublin at The Barn of Music in 2022, where the EP took on its final shape. The result is a collection that feels both timeless and contemporary, a nod to the 60s soul era while firmly rooted in the present. The tracks on Willow cover a wide emotional spectrum. From the reflective "Letting Go of You" to the gospel-infused "In Another World" and the meditative "MANTRA," each song offers a unique glimpse into McMahon's world. The EP's title track, "Willow," is particularly evocative, blending imagery of nature with themes of wisdom and soul-searching.Â
