Welcome to In the Groove, a brand-new YouTube series from Jazz Ireland, where we bring you closer to the artists shaping the vibrant Irish jazz scene. We had a chance to visit Orlando Molina at his home in Dublin a few weeks ago to chat about his newly released album. Thanks so much to Orlando for taking the time to speak with us!
His latest album, ‘Autorretrato en Tres Colores (Self-Portrait in Three Colours)’ - a contemporary jazz album with Latin folk influences - is a musical memoir about Orlando’s journey from Venezuela to Ireland and explores themes of migration, resilience, and cultural identity. The album features contributions from various international musicians, including Matthew Jacobson (drums), Scott Flanigan (piano), Cormac O'Brien (double bass), and Steve Welsh (saxophones).
During the interview, Orlando spoke about his musical background and how he got into jazz, his move from Venezuela to Ireland, the theme of the album, the band, his compositional process and the upcoming tour.
