Meet the Team Behind the Series

Eric Doyle and Hayley Kabanagh

In the Groove is produced by Hayley Kavanagh and Eric Doyle, two passionate musicians and advocates for Irish jazz and the community surrounding it. After spending seven years living and performing in Prague and Berlin, the two returned to Ireland in 2023. Since then, they have immersed themselves in the Dublin jazz scene. Performing with their own projects and working as sidemen, as well as co-founding Cookin’ Dublin, a jazz event guide and jam session series, and the Arthur’s Jazz Jam at Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club.

Hayley (saxophone and flute) and Eric (guitar), both freelance musicians, possess a deep understanding of the challenges and joys of being part of a musical community. This makes them uniquely suited to this project. They believe that platforms like In the Groove play a vital role in fostering connections and showcasing the talent that Ireland has to offer.

In this episode, we teamed up with The Improvised Music Company and Better Live Music to bring you an interview with three members of the international quintet YDIVIDE.

We sat down with drummer and bandleader Clemens Kuratle, saxophonist Dee Byrne, and guitarist Chris Guilfoyle at The Cooler in Dublin to discuss YDIVIDE's new album The Default and their release tour.

A big thank you to Clemens, Dee, and Chris for taking the time to chat with us, and to the IMC for facilitating the interview. The Default is available on most streaming platforms, but we highly recommend purchasing it through Bandcamp: https://clemenskuratle.bandcamp.com/album/the-default.

The album features: Clemens Kuratle (drums, composition), Dee Byrne (alto sax), Chris Guilfoyle (guitar), Elliot Galvin (piano, electronics), Lukas Traxel (bass).

During the interview, the three discussed the formation of YDIVIDE, the challenges of being an international band, their tour, Better Live Music and more sustainable touring, Clemens’ compositional process, their future plans, other projects, and more.

Stay tuned for more episodes as In the Groove explores the stories, artistry, and passion behind Ireland’s thriving jazz community. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe to keep up with all the latest from Jazz Ireland!
