Flappers, Dandies and Jazz Cats, grab your pearls and bowler hats and celebrate with Emilie Conway, voice, Johnny Taylor, piano and Scott Kohlmann, guitar for Une Soirée Folle: In Walked Piet Album Launch, Inspired by the life and work of artist Piet Mondrian in roaring 2020s style!
The work of the Dutch modernist Piet Mondrian was profoundly influenced by jazz, brought to Paris by American army bands like the Harlem Hellfighters of WW1. Later fleeing Europe with the outbreak of WWII, Mondrian moved to New York City and frequented Minton’s Playhouse in the early 1940s.
Emilie's work for this album grew out of a performance commission from the National Gallery of Ireland in 2020 to coincide with their landmark Mondrian exhibition. Because of pandemic restrictions, the work was never performed.
Emilie used those isolated, quiet months to dig deeper into Mondrian’s life, work and influences. This research resulted in podcasts with the National Gallery (still available to stream! ) and a lecture series for New York City's global cultural center, the 92NY.
Now Emilie is delighted to share her musical response for Une Soiree Folle, her third album in an evening concert that will feature music from the new album alongside Jazz Age "hits" which Mondrian would have heard including The Charleston, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Blue Skies, Stardust and more.
Recorded at Camden Recording Studios, In Walked Piet was produced by Emilie Conway and Michael Buckley.
Blending original music, Jazz Age classics and the visual world of Piet Mondrian, In Walked Piet invites audiences to don their 20s attire for a vibrant celebration of art, modernism and jazz.
