Join 8-bit Funk at Doyle’s Corner for the launch of their debut album, Level Design — a six-track journey through the music of video games, reimagined through jazz, funk, fusion, neo-soul and more.
8-bit Funk brings together Leon Laisne on bass, Eoghan McCloskey on drums, Luca McArdle on keys and Cuan Dignan on saxophone and flute. Over the past year and a half, the Dublin-based quartet has been developing its distinctive combination of video game nostalgia and live jazz through performances around Ireland, including a sold-out Zelda Special at Arthur’s Jazz Club.
Level Design takes music from games including Pokémon Gold & Silver, Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog, with each arrangement taking its own musical direction. Expect organ funk, fusion, neo-soul, Latin, rock and plenty of improvisation, with jazz and funk at the heart of the band's sound.
The idea behind 8-bit Funk draws on a long jazz tradition. Just as generations of jazz musicians transformed the popular songs of their time into standards, the quartet takes the instantly recognisable video game music that accompanied a new generation growing up and uses it as a starting point for reinterpretation.
From Mario, Pokémon and Sonic to Zelda and Baldur’s Gate 3, expect an evening of familiar melodies taken somewhere completely different as 8-bit Funk celebrate the release of Level Design.
