Meet the Team Behind the Series

Eric Doyle and Hayley Kabanagh

In the Groove is produced by Hayley Kavanagh and Eric Doyle, two passionate musicians and advocates for Irish jazz and the community surrounding it. After spending seven years living and performing in Prague and Berlin, the two returned to Ireland in 2023. Since then, they have immersed themselves in the Dublin jazz scene. Performing with their own projects and working as sidemen, as well as co-founding Cookin’ Dublin, a jazz event guide and jam session series, and the Arthur’s Jazz Jam at Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club.

Hayley (saxophone and flute) and Eric (guitar), both freelance musicians, possess a deep understanding of the challenges and joys of being part of a musical community. This makes them uniquely suited to this project. They believe that platforms like In the Groove play a vital role in fostering connections and showcasing the talent that Ireland has to offer.

Welcome to In the Groove, a brand-new YouTube series from Jazz Ireland, where we bring you closer to the artists shaping the vibrant Irish jazz scene.

Just before Christmas, we had the pleasure of speaking with acclaimed guitarist and composer Phil Robson on behalf of Jazz Ireland. The interview took place in his home in Roscommon, and we’re grateful to both Phil and Christine Tobin (referred to in the interview as Christine) for their hospitality and for allowing us to film in such a beautiful setting.

Phil spoke about his upcoming gig in Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club, his influences, past projects, the Irish jazz scene, and future plans.

He spoke highly of many musicians throughout our conversation, though some names had to be omitted during editing for cohesivity. We would like to acknowledge them here: Vic Juris, Wayne Krantz, Peter Bernstein, Peter Leitch (New Life Orchestra), Paul Dunlea, Neil Ó Loclainn, Dan Bodwell, Darragh Hennessy, Kevin Brady, Jennifer McMahon (Irish Women in Jazz), Aleka Potinga (Dublin Jazz Co-op), Chris Guilfoyle, Michael and Conor Murray.

Make sure to catch Phil Robson’s upcoming gig with his trio (Dave Redmond, Double Bass; Dominic Mullan, Drums) on January 26th 2025 in Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club.
