Event Description

Formed by drummer Art Blakey in the 1950s as a collective, The Jazz Messengers occupies a special place in the annals of Jazz music in the twentieth century. Notable for fostering the talents of emerging players Blakey enlisted some of the most significant practitioners in the history of the music. Notable examples are Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Woody Shaw, Cedar Walton, and Wynton and Branford Marsalis, to name just a handful. Many of the compositions that these members would pen for the group went on to become some of the most beloved arrangements for Jazz sextet in all of the music.

Aren’t Blakey will be performing the original arrangements of many of the most iconic works from the Jazz Messengers book – pieces that overflow with joyful hard bop in a way that is always swingin’

LINLEY HAMILTON – TRUMPET
CATHAL ROCHE – TENOR SAXOPHONE
COLM O’HARA – TROMBONE
SCOTT FLANIGAN – PIANO
CORMAC O’BRIEN – BASS
KEVIN BRADY – DRUMS

Aren't Blakey, the cheekily named sextet put together by Dublin-based Australian Doctor of Music and saxophonist Daniel Rorke, played a night of Blakey tunes, mostly from the pens of Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard...full-on, no-prisoners taken, Jazz Messengers hard-bop belters, like One by One, the Core, Children of the Night, Crisis and Free for All... the room was jumping!

“A forty-seater with a full sextet of piano, bass and drums and a front line of trumpet, sax and trombone where the bells of the instruments were almost touching the heads of those sitting in the front row. Scott Flanigan, the general on piano, Kevin Brady holding the hot seat on drums and Cormac O'Brien the rock on bass, with our Linley smoldering on trumpet, Paul Dunlea tearing it up on trombone and Daniel Rorke articulating his tenor through intricate heads and raging solos. It was mighty...three doctors of jazz and a band full of educators with Kevin Brady, who's last album made it to the list of top ten jazz albums of 2022, by the American Downbeat Magazine! Yeah baby!! This is what it's all about!”
