Event Description

Kenny Wheeler is one of the major figures in contemporary jazz, a virtuoso trumpeter and one of the most important composers in jazz in the second half of the 20th century. His recordings on the ECM label with Keith Jarret, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette and many others are considered to be among the finest recordings in the ECM catalogue.

Nick Smart is an internationally renowned jazz educator, trumpeter and conductor who has given guest masterclasses and performances around the world. In 2013 he was awarded the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Jazz Education, in 2015 awarded Honorary Membership of the Royal Academy of Music. Nick was a close colleague and friend of the late Kenny Wheeler and has been instrumental in keeping Wheeler’s legacy alive. As well as being a member of Kenny’s big band, Nick helped manage the latter stages of Kenny's career, secured the Kenny Wheeler Archive into the Royal Academy of Music Collections, and co-wrote the biography; ‘Song for Someone: The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler ‘

For this performance of Wheeler’s iconic compositions, Nick is joined by Michael Buckley and Ronan Guilfoyle, both of whom also played and toured with Kenny Wheeler, so there will be a depth of expertise and immersion on Wheeler’s music in Arthur’s that is second to none. Joining them are two of the best young musicians on the Irish scene; Leo Osio on piano and Brendan Doherty on drums.

In what promises to be an extraordinary celebration of the music of Kenny Wheeler, the concert will also mark the Irish launch of ‘Song for Someone ‘, Nick’s book on Wheeler
