Event Description
eclectic selection of jazz and fusion classics by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Miles Davis & a number of Karl's originals
Karl Clews is a bassist and composer based in Galway. After 10 years as a session and touring musician in the UK, working with such names as PJ Harvey, David McAlmont, Jamiroquai and Dr John, Karl relocated to Ireland in the late 2000s.
While continuing to record and tour internationally, in his downtime Karl started a YouTube channel where, inspired by the likes of Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten, he demonstrates the much under-appreciated potential of the electric bass guitar as both a solo and lead instrument. A number of his arrangements and compositions have 'gone viral', having been picked up and shared online by such bass luminaries as Bootsy Collins, George Anderson, Mo Foster, and Armand Sabal-Lecco, and his YouTube channel continues to go from strength to strength, resulting in a number of high-profile endorsements and regular showcases and clinics at trade fairs and festivals across the world, including NAMM, the UK Bass & Guitar Show, the Guitar Summit in Mannheim, Manchester Jazz Festival and the Pori Jazz Festival.
Karl has released three albums under his own name - Dissident, Navigator, and Nomad - each showcasing his own jazz-funk-fusion compositions and the versatility of the bass guitar beyond its traditional rhythm section role. He will be joined at Arthur's by two of his regular collaborators and featured performers on those albums - Richie Dittrich, a young rising star of the Irish drumming world; and Bertrand Huve on the sax, a veteran of the Irish jazz scene .
