Event Description

This quartet brings together Irish guitarist John Moriarty and US pianist Randy Ingram, joined by bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Shane O’Donovan. The collaboration builds on a shared musical history, including Moriarty’s 2013 album Echoes (Lyte Records), which features Ingram on piano.

Moriarty is a long-established figure in Irish jazz, known for a modern guitar style grounded in swing, harmonic clarity, and strong melodic development. He has toured and recorded with artists including Bill Carrothers, Bobby Watson, and Ronnie Cuber, and was a prize-winner at the Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Competition. DownBeat described him as “an excellent player, dynamically varied and adventurous.”

Randy Ingram is a New York–based pianist and composer recognised for his work as both a leader and sideman in contemporary jazz. He has released a series of acclaimed recordings on Sunnyside Records and, more recently, Aries Dance (Sounderscore Records, 2024), featuring Drew Gress and Billy Hart, which received a 4.5-star DownBeat review. Ingram has performed internationally at leading jazz venues and festivals and has collaborated with a wide range of artists across jazz and related genres. Writing in The New York Times, Nate Chinen noted that “Randy Ingram pursues a spirit of fluent modernity… A young pianist drawn to contemporary harmony and a sleek rhythmic sensibility; astute, self-possessed.”
The repertoire includes original compositions alongside jazz standards and modern material, presented in a straight-ahead quartet format with featured improvisation from each member of the band.

About the Musicians
John Moriarty is one of Ireland’s foremost jazz guitarists. A dedicated working jazz musician from age 18, John was an early recipient of the Skidmore jazz award, which helped him to excel in the Irish jazz scene. In his early 20s John had the opportunity to play duet concerts with the great Louis Stewart, and in his final years Louis would often call John to substitute for his piano player. John has been fortunate to play with many other greats over the years including US pianist Bill Carrothers, Bobby Watson of ‘Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers’ and sax legend Ronnie Cuber. As guitarist in the Guinness jazz house band in the early 2000s, the band hosted jazz stars such as Chris Potter, Greg Abate & Roy Hargrove. In 2005, John was a finalist at Montreux Jazz Festival’s prestigious International Jazz Guitar Competition. This was alongside Norwegian Bjorn Solli and the acclaimed NYC based guitarist Gilad Hekselman. In recent times, John plays regularly with the Richie Buckley Quintet as well as his own quartet and trio projects. Recent collaborations include Spanish musicians Gonzalo Del Val and Anders Bergcrantz. His 2013 release, Echoes (Lyte Records), was critically well received, including ‘album of the week’ on the RTÉ-Ten website, and a 4-start review in the US magazine Downbeat.

“A fluid, hard-swinging player…well-crafted and polished…quietly mesmerising…” – The Irish Times

Dave Redmond is known for his collaborations with Irish and international artists including Larry Coryell, Seamus Blake, Dave Liebman, Van Morrison, Jason Rebello and many more. He has appeared on over 35 albums of established artists and regularly performs at festivals in countries such as Mexico, Dubai, London, China, Colombia, all over Europe, Ukraine, Russia and the U.S.

Randy Ingram is a New York-based pianist and composer widely respected for his work as both a leader and collaborator in contemporary jazz. A graduate of the University of Southern California and the New England Conservatory, he studied with Alan Pasqua, Danilo Pérez, Fred Hersch, George Russell, and Bob Brookmeyer, and was selected for the Kennedy Center’s Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program. He is a recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award and is an established member of the New York jazz community. Ingram has released six albums as a leader and co-leader in duo, trio, and quartet formats, including four recordings on Sunnyside Records and Aries Dance (Sounderscore Records, 2024). He has performed and recorded with artists such as John Patitucci, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Ari Hoenig, Ben Monder, Ingrid Jensen, Joe Locke, Marcus Gilmore, Joel Frahm, Kendrick Scott, and Drew Gress, and has appeared at major venues and festivals across the US, Europe, and Japan. Ingram is based in Brooklyn and has been a faculty member of the Drew University Music Department since 2020.

Shane O’Donovan is a Dublin-based drummer and producer at the heart of Ireland’s jazz scene. He has collaborated with many of the country’s leading jazz musicians through projects like OKO, Gamerz (with Kit Downes), BigSpoon, and Plaza Real, while also performing with international artists such as Tim Berne, Ernie Watts, and Greg Osby. Under the moniker H-Ci, O’Donovan explores the intersection of electronic music and jazz, drawing influence from artists like Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada. His work blends intricate rhythms with contemporary and avant-garde elements, utilizing synthesizers and both electronic and acoustic drums. A versatile performer and innovative composer, O’Donovan continues to shape Ireland’s musical landscape with his boundary-pushing approach.
