Event Description

Time Out is a 1959 studio album by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, often linked to the cool jazz and West Coast jazz movements. This album was inspired by musical traditions Brubeck encountered while touring Eurasia on a U.S. State Department and one key influence came from Turkey, where he heard street musicians playing in 9/8 time, a structure rarely used in Western music.

The album challenged standard jazz forms and became an unlikely commercial success: it reached No. 2 on the Billboard pop chart, and its standout track “Take Five” became the first jazz single to sell over a million copies. In recognition of its impact, Time Out was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009 and selected by the Library of Congress for the National Recording Registry of America in 2005 for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance

Lineup:

Matthew Berrill - Alto sax
