LOCAL LEGENDS #1: Lewis Smith Ensemble

The first of our new Local Legends series, where we’re delighted to be featuring familiar faces from across the Northern Irish jazz scene: musicians who have made a significant impact on jazz within Northern Ireland. First up is Belfast-based saxophonist Lewis Smith.

For over 25 years he has performed, taught and composed music. Lewis went as far as travelling to Kazakhstan to research the traditional music there as influence for his compositions but mostly I have worked in jazz across Northern Ireland. Lewis was the soprano saxophonist in the Brian Irvine Ensemble for 11 years; played Glastonbury festival with the DnB band Spree; performed in Kazakhstan and Kyrgystan; performed around Europe, and worked for television and radio with compositions featured in a documentary about Belfast. Currently Lewis is in the final stages of his PhD at Ulster University, where he is using immersive technology as a means of not only creating a new performance area for inclusive ensemble performances but as a space for compositions created by musicians like those in inclusive-ensemble Acoustronic.

For this special outing at Scott’s Jazz Club, Lewis returns to his jazz saxophone roots alongside the wonderful Belfast vocalist Suzanne Savage, Scott Flanigan on piano, Rohan Armstrong on bass and Steve Davis on drums.

Scott's Jazz Club is a Thursday night Jazz concert/ livestream event at Ballyhackamore club on No. 1 Sandown Road, East Belfast. The concert price is £15 and includes Bangladeshi finger food . The drink prices are really low as well!
