Event Description

The Dublin Jazz Co-op present Comerford | Jacobson | Maynard Smith play Mingus, Monk and Ornette at The Vintage Room at Workman's Club, Dublin on Sunday 13th March 2022.

Sam Comerford (sax) is one of a cohort of creative Irish musicians to settle abroad over the last 10 years. This is an opportunity to hear him perform on home soil alongside highly active Dublin-based musicians Sean Maynard Smith (bass) and Matthew Jacobson (drums). The trio will be performing select compositions from Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk and Ornette Coleman.

Comerford composes for and leads the trio Thunderblender, whose critically acclaimed debut album Stillorgan (WERF records, 2020) was described by RTE Lyric FM as “the estrangement of the familiar”. Upcoming projects as a bandleader include a solo saxophone album based on the music of Irish fiddler Tommie Potts, a second album with Thunderblender, and the soundtrack of experimental horror film Hexham Heads.

Alongside his own musical activities he maintains a busy schedule touring and recording in various projects incorporating elements of jazz, improvised music, and Irish music. These include Lander & Gorik (BE) Neil Ó Loclainn’s Cuar (IE), Hendrik Lasure & warm bad (BE), Aerie (DE/IE/CH), Umbra (IE), Insufficient Funs (IE), Augusto Pirroda Septet (IT/BE), ODIL (BE/CH/FR), Mobilhome (BE), Utsav Lal & Ragas to Reels, Teh Trio (TW), Hayden Chisholm saxophone quartet (IE, 2013), and European Saxophone Ensemble (2012-13), led by Guillaume Orti.

Jacobson is an Irish drummer, improviser, composer, educator and producer. As well as leading his own groups ReDiviDeR and Insufficient Funs (a duo that also features Comerford on bass saxophone), he co-leads Roamer – a quartet of Ireland's most internationally recognised improvisers – and regularly tours, performs and records with leading creative musicians around the world.

He is a jazz lecturer at Dublin City University and holds a PhD from Ulster University. He is also a Fulbright Scholar, co-director of independent Irish record label Diatribe and has received numerous awards and scholarships from institutions including Arts Council of Ireland, Music Network, Berklee College of Music and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

Maynard Smith is the bassist and creative force behind groups such as Betapus (2017) and IRELAND (2018) and also currently performs with the likes of Fixity, The Bonk, Pizza Jazz and Ben Prevo. His most recent release 'Maynard Eh No', featuring all his own original compositions was self-released in July 2021.

He is also the promoter of renowned Dublin improvised music residency 'Sticklepathic Child'.
