The Sofa Sessions is proud to present one of Ireland’s most unique talents, vocalist and composer Sue Rynhart, accompanied by two of the most sought after musicians on the Irish jazz scene, US bassist Dan Bodwell and Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi. Blending jazz, avant pop, folk and improv, Rynhart’s music is balm for the ears, full of unexpected twists and turns, and delivered with an authentic conviction that makes her sui generis music instantly accessible and emotionally involving.

About Sue Rynhart

Vocalist and composer Sue Rynhart's debut album 'Crossings' (Songs for Voice & Double Bass) with Dan Bodwell was nominated 'Best Jazz Album' in the Irish Times Ticket Awards 2014, and her new album 'Signals' is receiving International critical acclaim from publications and radio including; The Irish Times, American website 'All About Jazz', Folk Radio UK, Scandanavian Jazz Review 'Salt Peanuts', RTÉ and BBC. In performing with Dylan Rynhart's Fuzzy Logic Ensemble, she has sung with international Jazz artists, Rick Peckham, Tom Arthurs and Florian Ross. She has premiered works by many of the Composers from the Irish Composers Collective & the Contemporary Music Centre and and has performed on BBC Radio with the Choir of Christchurch Cathedral Dublin. She has been featured extensively on Róisín Ingle's Irish Times podcast 'Róisín meets', The Blue of the Night RTÉ Lyric fm and on Bernard Clarke's award winning radio programme 'Nova' on RTÉ Lyric fm. Sue has performed her music at many festivals such as Electric Picnic, Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, Drogheda Arts Festival, Bray Jazz Festival, Waterford New Music Week, Liverpool Irish Festival at the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room, Jazzy Colors Festival Paris and in the Main auditorium in the National Concert Hall Dublin for the Perspectives Jazz festival as a support act for ECM Trumpeter Tomasz Stanko.

About Dan Bodwell

Daniel Bodwell studied classical double bass at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, and jazz double bass at the Hochschule für Künste, Bremen. He is a founder member of the New York based Micah Gaugh Trio with Kevin Shea. He currently performs with Mary Coughlan, the Nigel Mooney Quartet, the Francesco Turrisi Trio, Julie Feeney, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra, the Quiet Music Ensemble and the Crash Ensemble.

About Francesco Turrisi

“A Musical Alchemist”

Francesco Turrisi has been defined a “musical alchemist” and a “musical polyglot” by the press. He left his native Italy in 1997 to study jazz piano and early music at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he obtained a Bachelor and a Master’s degree. Since 2004 he has been collaborating with celebrated early music ensemble L’Arpeggiata. With l’Arpeggiata he has performed at the major early music festivals in Europe and around the world (Turkey, Russia, China) and has recorded for Virgin, Naive and Alpha. He regularly collaborates with Italian traditional singer Lucilla Galeazzi and with Irish ensembles Yurodny (balkan music/contemporary jazz), The Gregory Walkers (early music), Resound (contemporary music), eX ensemble (early music).

Francesco is also the leader and founder of “The Taquín Experiments” an ensemble that pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz, world music and early music.

He has released four critically acclaimed albums as a leader and two as co-leader (Tarab and Zahr) on Diatribe records and on his own label Taquin records.

His latest album “Grigio” features Sean Nos singer Roisin El Safty, early music singer Clara Sanabras and percussion virtuoso Zohar Fresco. The album was described as “Lyrical, sensitively assembled and beautifully sung” by John Fordham in a review for The Guardian

His vast range of collaborations includes artists from jazz, world and early music such as:

Bobby McFerrin, Dave Liebman, Gianluigi Trovesi, Nils Landgren, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Barry Guy, Gabriele Mirabassi, Savina Yannatou, Maria Pia de Vito, Theodosii Spassov, Gavin Bryars, Bang on a Can, Misia, The King’s Singers, Veronique Gens, Philippe Jaroussky, Pepe el Habichuela, Lucilla Galeazzi, Bijan Chemirani.
