“Passionate… superb… heartfelt”

– The Guardian

Tony Kofi is an award-winning British jazz saxophonist. Today he presents the music of jazz legend Thelonious Monk, with the help of a stellar international line up of musicians.

A multi-instrumentalist born of Ghanaian parents, Tony plays Alto, Baritone, Soprano, Tenor saxophones and flute. Having 'cut his teeth' in the “Jazz Warriors” of the early 90’s, has gone on to establish himself as a musician, teacher and composer of some authority. As well as performing and recording with Gary Crosby's “NuTroop” and “Jazz Jamaica”, Tony’s playing has also been a feature of many bands and artists he has worked/recorded with include “US-3” The World Saxophone Quartet, Courtney Pine, Donald Byrd, Eddie Henderson, The David Murray Big Band, Sam Rivers Rivbe Big band, Andrew Hill Big Band, Abdullah Ibrahim, Macy Gray, Julian Joseph Big band, Harry Connick JR, Byron Wallen's Indigo, Jamaaladeen Tacuma's Coltrane Configurations and Ornette Coleman. His fluent and fiery hard-bop style makes him constantly in demand.

He currently leads his own Tony Kofi Quartet, Portrait of Cannonball (Music dedicated to Cannonball Adderley) Tony Kofi and the Organisation, a recent project which he co leads on the Baritone Saxophone, and is also the co-founder with Jonathan Gee of the Monk Liberation Front, a group that is dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk.

1.30pm The Dirty Jazz Club

Dublin band The Dirty Jazz Club have been an integral and underground part of the Irish jazz scene for over a quarter of a century. Formed during a time of economic growth in the late 90’s, their name evoked corners of the capital untouched by leather sofas, the jazz brunch and Irish coffees. The group’s first gigs were in an anarchist social centre where they provided an alternative focus for jazz listeners, where extended solos, group communication, human feeling and textural soundscape could breathe freely, through the music of John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and others.

After two and a half decades of performing before the interruption of lockdown, the group turned to the studio to create an album dedicated to Wayne Shorter. Each composition on The Shorter Perspective was arranged and performed with the band’s unique improvisatory approach in mind. With 5 dates scheduled for this Summer, the group is now touring this work with the aim of further exploring the compositions and their own brand of invention.

“This is where you will find the core jazz principles of communication and interaction, with musicians comfortable enough to take risks and familiar enough to anticipate each other’s next move.”

Cormac Larkin, The Irish Times.
