The Jazz Ambassadors (film) | Galway Jazz Festival

With his trio featuring Eoin Walsh on bass and drummer Dominic Mullan, he presents a fabulous programme of highly original compositions and the occasional standard.

Lauren Kinsella - Saoirse | Galway Jazz Festival

SAOIRSE is teideal do thionscadal nua Lauren Kinsella, amhránaí agus cumadóir.

Commissioned by Galway Jazz Festival, it is an exploration of our heritage and culture, taking traditional Conamara sean nós as inspiration for daring new compositions and improvisation. Ever mindful of the massive weight of responsibility in taking on such a task, Lauren and her co-creators, Tom Challenger, Benedict Taylor and Kit Downes have immersed themselves in language, song and story, and have brought their considerable musicianship and artistic sensibilities to the table in this unique and compelling creation, a window on our past opening into a wide vista of contemporary expression. Not to be missed.

Zrazy | Galway Jazz Festival

Still Zrazy after all these years! Since 1992, this groundbreaking duo of Carole Nelson and Maria Walshe have been flying the flag for slick and sassy jazzpop with intelligence, humour and grooves you could plant spuds in. Glam, poetic, with a hint of minxy subversion, they'll have you dancing on the inside. Bring spangles.

Andreas Varady Trio | Galway Jazz Festival

19:00 | Ireland - An Taibhdhearc
Andreas Varady Trio | Galway Jazz Festival

The youngest ever headliner in the renowned Ronnie Scott's Club, 13 year old Andreas blew everyone away with his virtuosity, his highly creative improvisations, and, dammit, his sheer swingtastic musicianship! That was back in 2011. Now, at the ripe old age of 21, Andreas has consolidated his early promise, and gained world wide attention and admiration, playing with the likes of Lee Ritenour, Gregory Porter and Soweto Kinch, and has been taken under the wing of the legendary Quincy Jones.

Renaud Garcia Fons/Claire Antonini | Galway Jazz Festival

21:00 | Ireland, Galway - The Black Gate Cultural Centre
Renaud Garcia Fons/Claire Antonini | Galway Jazz Festival

An album of double bass and theorbo duets is really not something that comes around that often, so when FARANGI, a collaboration between bass magician Renaud Garcia Fons, and virtuosos lutenist, Claire Antonini was released in May, it made quite an impact.

Bog Bodies | Galway Jazz Festival

13:30 | Ireland, Galway - The Mick Lally Theatre
Bog Bodies | Galway Jazz Festival

A GJF19 commission, Bog Bodies features Robert Stillman, Anders Holst, and Sean Carpio responding to, and playing against, a live sonic landscape of field-recordings collected in the Inagh Valley by Sharon Phelan. Through extended recording techniques, moments of careful observation, and creative composition, this performative collaboration is an unfolding of the Connemara landscape - from the sounds of oak forests, lakes and granite to the haunted Hertzian space of Marconi's past transmissions.

Kaja Draksler and Eve Risser | Galway Jazz Festival

20:30 | Ireland, Galway - The Mick Lally Theatre
Kaja Draksler and Eve Risser | Galway Jazz Festival

The piano is called the king of instruments, so when two pianos get together, this is quite the regal discourse. Kaja and Eve make majestic music, exploring an immense sound world, channelling the ghost of Stravinsky, catching wisps of folk tunes as they fly by, evoking a playground of toy pianos, twinkling stars, then turning on a sixpence to slam into muscular high octane jousting. Individually they are seriously impressive, together they are formidable, intrepid, authoritative and bold. They rule, OK.

Daniele Di Bonaventura - Band'Union | Galway Jazz Festival

16:30 | Ireland - Loam Restaurant
Daniele Di Bonaventura - Band'Union | Galway Jazz Festival

An instrument most often heard in the brash and intense white heat of Argentinian tango, in the hands of Daniele Di Bonaventura the bandoneon is balm, the silk rather than satin, the love poem, seducing and beguiling. We are thrilled to welcome him and the ensemble Band'Union to Ireland for the very first time.

Nils Okland Ensemble | Galway Jazz Festival

19:00 | Ireland, Galway - St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church
Nils Okland Ensemble | Galway Jazz Festival

A musician who has never put limits on the scope of his own musical exploration, hardanger fiddle virtuoso Nils Økland creates soundscapes, stories, atmospheres, and with his fellow musicians on saxophone, vibes, harmonium and bass throws a filigree net around his audience, and draws them into his world of dark and light, texture, clarity, and structure, and allows us to eavesdrop on this five way conversation where all voices are equal contributors and creators.
