Event Description

An evening full of nostalgia and romance, song and spoken word in the company of Susannah de Wrixon, Jim Doherty and The Delmaine string quartet. Celebrate the incredible musical career of Irelands premier jazz pianist who for more than six decades of entertaining finds his way back to the Gate Theatre.The concert will evoke joy  love and laughter with poetry from Mary Oliver, E.E Cummings . Dorothy Parker, W H Auden and Danusha Lameris

Music ranges from the Great american songbook to original composition, featuring work from Duke Ellington , Johnny Mercer ,Tom lehrer and many more

We keep the company of The Delmaine String Quartet and Berry Donohue on Double bass who wrap this beautiful jazz sound in a warm blanket of string arrangements.

Jim Doherty

Jim has been working in the entertainment industry for 60 years. He has played with some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world, including Zoot Sims, Gerry Mulligan, and Louis Stewart.

He was musical director of the Late Late Show for a decade. He has  composed and recorded over 500 ‘jingles’ and signature tunes,  including “Seven Days”,  “Hall’s pictorial Weekly” and “Wonderly Wagon”.

He is an Abbey playwright and composed the first Abbey Musical “Innish”.

He has produced and recorded dozens of jazz albums and continues to be a dynamic force in the Irish jazz scene.

He has been Susannah’s regular accompanist for over a decade.

 

Susannah de Wrixon

Susannah has been working as an actor/singer & comedienne for over 30 years.

As an actor, she has been a regular at the Abbey Theater in shows like “An Ideal husband”, “The Shaughraun”,  “Living quarters”.

Other roles include “I keano”, “Dancing at Lunasa”, “King Lear”.

Musically her tribute shows to Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Blossom Dearie have won critical acclaim, both here and abroad.

She has recorded 3 albums including several self-composed  songs.

She toured with the comedy trio “The Nualas” for over two years and it is thanks to this experience that she continues to hone her style fronting her own shows.

TV and film work  include “Fair city” and “The Clinic”Striking out”

She has shared stages with artists such as Rosaline Linehan and Mary Coughlan and has also performed with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra, and is a regular performer at the National Concert Hall, Dublin.

Susannah is always looking for new collaborations and developing new shows.

Formed in 1995, the Delmaine String Quartet have studied with Adrian Petcu, Constantin Zanidache, Andreea Banciu, among others.  The Quartet have attended masterclasses with the Alberni Quartet at Madingley College, Cambridge, and also with Paul Robertson (Medici String Quartet).  In 2009 each member of the Quartet completed an MA degree programme in Performance, at CIT/Cork School of Music, tutored by the Vanbrugh Quartet.

The Quartet has performed many public concerts at venues including  the National Concert Hall, Dublin, the Peacock Theatre, Dublin, Airfied House, Dublin, Kylemore Abbey, Co. Galway, Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork, and  at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris. 

The Quartet is currently performing a series of collaborative projects with actors Susannah De Wrixon & Michael James Ford.

The Quartet was recently involved in a project entitled “Songs about home” working with text, choir , photography and more all thanks to the Grange Gorman Development Organization.
