Event Description
Join us for an evening celebrating the life and music of the great Ella Fitzgerald, performed by Stella Bass and Hugh Buckley.
2017 is the centenary of the birth of the great Ella Fitzgerald. To mark this anniversary, Jazz Sing and Producer Stella Bass along with renowned Irish guitarist Hugh Buckley are performing a tribute to her life and music.
2016 marks that Ella died 20 years ago. Ella Fitzgerald was – and still is - considered an American icon by the time she passed away in 1996, after a career spanning nearly sixty years. She is considered one of the most unique and innovative singers in history, winning 13 Grammy Awards and selling over 40 million albums during her career.
Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz, pop tunes and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She worked with all the jazz greats, from Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Nat King Cole, to Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie and Benny Goodman. Or rather, some might say all the jazz greats had the honour of working with Ella! She performed at top venues all over the world – including the Adelphi in Dublin in 1964 - and packed them to the rafters.
Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range: they were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities. In fact, many of them had just one binding factor in common - they all loved her.
Irish jazz singer Stella Bass pays tribute to the life and times of this singing legend on the twentieth anniversary of her passing, with a musical journey through her life and discography, accompanied by internationally-acclaimed Irish jazz guitarist, Hugh Buckley.
