Irish genre-blending band Shy Mascot return with their latest single, How's Tricks, released on 17 July. Known for fusing funk, jazz and hip-hop, the band continue to explore new musical territory with a track that takes listeners on an emotional journey through the process of finding closure and rediscovering freedom after a relationship ends.
How's Tricks uses contrasting musical ideas to reflect the emotional stages of a break-up. The fast-paced verses capture the chaotic thoughts that can follow the end of a relationship, driven by an unusual 7/4 time signature that adds a sense of unease. The chorus then provides a calmer contrast, with Jamel and Fiadh's call-and-response vocals reflecting the back-and-forth exchanges that often accompany the aftermath of a break-up.
The track also features an intricate bass solo, representing the process of working through emotions before reaching a point of release. Guest saxophonist Dennis Scully adds melodic lines that reinforce the feeling of freedom and renewal, bringing another dimension to the band's evolving sound.
Speaking about the release, the band said:
"This track represents us really well and showcases what we're capable of as a band. The way the sung and rap vocals blend together, the groove within the rhythm section, the bass solo, and the addition of Dennis's saxophone all feel like a natural extension of who we are. It's us experimenting, pushing ourselves creatively, and building on what we can do together."
Based in Dublin, Shy Mascot combine elements of funk, jazz and hip-hop into a sound that is both contemporary and rooted in groove. Fronted by Jamel's rap vocals and Fiadh's vocals, the band have performed at festivals including All Together Now, Forbidden Fruit, Galway Jazz Festival, Bray Jazz Festival, Cork Jazz Festival, Kilkenny's Sofa Sessions, Knockanstockan and Red Bull FREE GAFF. They have also performed their track Constantly on RTÉ's Seisiún and have been featured by The Irish Times, Hot Press, District Magazine, Nialler9 and All About Jazz.
