Event Description
Continuing the TrioTrioTrioPiano Festival in Arthur's Bar in Dublin's Thomas Street, the second night sees two more piano trios take to the stage. Joining us in celebrating 35 years of Jazz on The Terrace are six outstanding jazz musicians who will play a varied programme.
First up on Friday 17 November is The Johnny Taylor Trio. Johnny Taylor was born in London and studied classical piano and clarinet from a young age, playing in orchestras and gaining an ABRSM diploma in piano performance. Upon moving to Ireland, he became a music scholar at Trinity College and graduated with a First Class Honours degree in 2006. After studying with a scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Johnny returned to Dublin and began playing jazz full time.
He currently leads his own piano trio as well as playing in the groups of various notable Irish musicians including Nigel Mooney, Cormac Kenevey, Alex Mathias and Suzanne Savage. Currently he is musical director for Emilie Conway. In April 2014 he toured with The Emilie Conway Quintet in Ireland, presenting the Songs of Alec Wilder. This tour was organised by Jazz on the Terrace.
The Johnny Taylor Trio amazed and delighted audiences in 2015 during the original TrioTrioPiano festival, organised by Jazz on the Terrace. Check them out on YouTube.
He is joined on Friday 17th November at 9.00pm in Arthurs Bar, Thomas St. by Barry Donahue on Double Bass and Dominic Mullan on Drums.
The second trio of the evening is the Nikki Iles Trio. Nikki is described in The Guardian as "one of the most refreshing figures to have emerged in the UK in recent times with a liquid sound and supple, obliquely resolved phrasing as an improviser…. "
Nikki Iles was born Dunstable, Bedfordshire. She has been a high musical achiever from a young age and comes from a musical family. Studies brought her north to Leeds where she based herself for many years, moving to London in the mid-90s. While she maintains a very busy performing schedule she also teaches at university level and has published a number of books of jazz piano music.
