Aleka is a Romanian vocalist, cellist, composer and lyricist who draws influence from her home country, using folk melodies interspersed with jazz harmony and eastern rhythms.
She has made a name for herself as one of the top jazz singers in Ireland, garnering attention from some of the household names of Irish Jazz, most recently working with renowned guitarist Tommy Halferty, Ronan Guilfoyle, Michael Buckley, Kevin Brady, Dave Redmond, Cello Ireland and Izumi Kimura. Aleka also released her debut EP in November 2016, receiving a 4-star review from The Irish Times.
Her debut album 'Person I Knew', will be released on April 18th with a stellar band: Chris Guilfoyle on guitar, Ronan Guilfoyle on bass, Michael Buckley on sax and legendary drummer Eric Ineke.
While the 'Aleka' EP focused on mostly original material, 'Person I Knew' is a collection of some of her favourite tunes from the great American songbook as well as compositions by jazz visionaries such as Wayne Shorter and Bill Evans.
Eric Ineke is no stranger to Irish shores. Having developed a strong working relationship with bassist Ronan Guilfoyle, Eric has visited the main jazz clubs in Dublin almost annually over the last 10 years. Despite this, neither Eric nor Ronan have made a record together. Having been so impressed with his most recent concert in Dublin, Aleka became the catalyst to finally get this unique pairing on record.
'Fresh sounds with eastern tinges'
The Irish Times
'Hip cosmopolitan sounds... have a borderless, trans-national flavour, liberally spiced with bossa nova, downtown jazz, outlier pop, art rock and free improv'
The Irish Times
'Experience, delight, vocation, hardwork, emotion, recreation, variation, improvisation – all of these revealed a moment of musical quality'
‘Pure class from all musicians is what’s expected, and they certainly deliver … Aleka is flying the flag for the arts, and did more than enough to prove this music is as strong as ever.‘
‘A talented singer with equal measures of potency and nuance in her craft. A name to watch out for. ‘
