Event Description
Galway Jazz Festival is proud to celebrate Piano Day 2018 in the company of one of the world’s leading innovators in piano sound and design, and with one of Ireland’s most creative and accomplished musicians.
In 2013 German piano builder David Klavins http://www.klavins-pianos.com/ was commissioned by groundbreaking musician Nils Frahm http://www.nilsfrahm.com/ to build a piano easily transportable for touring, and that offered a quieter, more subtle and warmer sound than conventional modern instruments. The Una Corda piano was the result of this collaboration.
Italian-born Irish resident Francesco Turrisi http://www.francescoturrisi.com/ has been a leading voice in the European Jazz/Improv community for more than 20 years. In 2016 he was supported by Music Network to purchase one of only 15 Una Corda pianos that have been produced, and this event will mark it’s very first public outing in Ireland.
The concert will feature both the Una Corda piano and a conventional modern 7ft Steinway grand piano, with music written and arranged to illustrate the unique sound palette of the Una Corda, and highlight the contrast between these two modern variations of the piano.
